Halmahera has a land area of 17,780 km² (6,865 square miles) and a 1995 population of about 162,728. In 1997, about 80% of the population were Muslim, and about 20% were Christians. The island is divided into 10 districts: East Halmahera Regency, South Halmahera Regency, Halmahera Barat Regency, Halmahera Utara Regency, Halmahera Tengah Regency, Sula Islands District, Morotai Island District, Ternate City, Tidore Islands City, Talibau Island District.
The northern part of Halmahera Island is the site of active volcanic activity. The non-volcanic islands of North Maluku are currently growing under the influence of marine processes, especially marine deposition. The volcanic zone located in the northern part of Halmahera Island forms a network pattern with volcanoes located on other islands such as Ternate Island, Tidore, Mare, Moti and Makian. Strong volcanic land form extends from east to west in the active volocytic holocene zone. Mount Dukono is an active volcano located in the northern eastern zone. Mount Dukono is a huge holocene volcano, its position is adjacent to the fault that leads to the northwest - southeast.
Halamahera is home to several mining projects. The Australian company Newcrest Mining is the main owner of two gold mines on the island.
